The renovation of the Highline in New York City allowed for a revitalization of urban activity on the lower east side. At the cross section of 18th street and 10th avenue, the Highline dance studio creates a billboard for local arts and performers to utilize the spaces within the building. Research into the physical form of dance and spaces that are created are translated into architectural form through the intertwining of public and private program based on user interactions. A large atrium that transfers from street level to Highline allows for a direct connection from street to public walkways while also allowing for an urban exhibition hub for artists to populate. Choreographed movements through balcony spaces within the atrium allows the public and performers to intertwine with culture and artwork in order to become part of the performance as they rise to the theatre above.

COMBINATION OF DESIRED SITE STRATEGY

PROGRAMMATIC BREAKDOWN: CONCEPT THREE KINDS OF SPACE

PERSONAL SPACE
Each dancer is at the center of his or her own three dimensional kinesphere which can only be expanded when one runs into object/people or when using your voice when moving creatively or dancing

SHARED SPACE
In order to create space to dance, one could move furniture or find a room large enough to fit ones personal space. All the room that is available for movement is shared space or general space

OUTER SPACE
In order to create space to dance, one could move furniture or find a room large enough to fit ones personal space. All the room that is available for movement is shared space or general space

APPLICATION OF CONCEPT: SPACE BREAKDOWN

DANCE STUDIO : SHARED SPACE
Open floor to allow dancers to practice. Transparency in walls to showcase.

CIRCULATION AND RESIDENCE : OUTER SPACE
Frosted glass halls create transparency between public and private. Showcases circulation and working function of building through opacity. Private hall to small for practicing dance so it is strictly circulatory.

ATRIUM : COMBINATION OF OUTER AND SHARED
Showcases circulation and working function of building through a gradient of opacity. Mixing of public and private circulation pathways being adjacent but not accessible as well as public exhibition areas.

RESIDENCE DETAILS: STUDIO AND LOFT APARTMENTS

EXTERIOR PRIVATE TERRACES
Each apartment contains an individual private terrace that connects back to the circulation hallways adjacent to the atrium. This creates viewports connecting the building back to the city beyond.
LOFTED APARTMENTS
The one bedroom apartments consist of two levels in order to allow for more light to enter into the spaces. In addition, this allows for larger views into the city beyond.

THEATER COMPONENTS

ACOUSTIC AXON DIAGRAM
Rotating acoustic panels were developed to create a multipurpose theater that could also be used for all types of events based on their acoustic needs.

Integrated skylights in this system allows for performances to be used throughout the day without the need of artifical light. These skylights have retractable shading in order to create the dark space if needed.
SIGHTLINES AND MECHANICAL DIAGRAM
An under seat HVAC system allows for user comfort below individual seats. This rises up through the articulated acoustical panels to a double layer roof system and skylight that allows for stack effect ventilation. This double roof system continues into the atrium allowing for a visual connection between the top mezzanine and atrium below.

STRUCTURE AND MECHANICS: BUILDING INTEGRATION

INTEGRATED FABRIC SHADING
To mimic the media facade on the eastern side of the building, a large curtain wall was established to create a billboard of the public and culture circulating through the exhibition atrium. The was developed into an integrated curtain wall shading device with fabric fins which allows for natural sunlight to enter into the building while reducing solar glare onto the high line and internal heat gain.

RESIDENCE DOUBLE FACADE
Continuing the frame of the media wall down into the residence block, a louver system was developed using the same structural framing of the media wall to allow for ventilation and solar shading into individual apartments. A double skin system was implemented in order to allow the user to control the air ventilation and shading in the individual apartments.

THEATER MEDIA FACADE
On the facade adjacent to the theater, a media was is established to create a billboard of the theaters events to the city beyond. This utilizes what would otherwise consider to be an unusable surface.
