The theme for the quilting bee was “What’s Your Pattern?”. In response to this idea we looked to nature as inspiration. Looking to the infinite patterns that the phases of the moons create, we decided to deconstruct it into a geometric form that could be sewn together to assemble the quilt. The crescents were turned into angular ratios of negative and positive space, with each square becoming an exercise in repetition. The 2017 lunar calendar is shown across 12 months condensed into 16 phases, with the shimmering harvest moon landing right where it should on the calendar. Moving from moon rise shades of purple to dark blue, the sky also changes, following the phases of the moon.
